Modelo – Especial? Eh…

Negra Modelo is a dark lager that I gusta mucho!  Having such high regard for Negra, I guess I expected more from it’s little sister, Modelo Especial.  The Especial is a very clean, crisp and light lager – but it’s so thin, it’s barely worth drinking in my opinion.  Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the sharp Pilsners and dark, rich Brown Ales so much that I really don’t have a taste for the average lager anymore.  I can say that it doesn’t have the horrible corn aftertaste of Miller and Budweiser – so that gives it an advantage, and it’s nice that they do offer this lager in a can for versatility.

When craving a beer, I’d prefer the Negra Modelo over the not so “Especial”.

Longboard – Decent Lager

I love that Kona Brewing Company, having their first brewery on “The Big Island”, embraces the whole Hawaiian theme and runs with it.   Not only do they have fun “beachy” names for their beers, they have Hawiaiian translations for different words on the inside of their bottle caps… too cool!!

Although I’m not a hard-core Lager fan, I did try their Longboard Lager recently.  I was impressed with how it doesn’t have that lingering Lager aftertaste that I normally don’t care for.  Their lager is clean and refreshing and even seems to have a little more body than an average lager.

If you feel like taking a trip to an island but don’t have the cash for a vacation, simply pick up a Kona sixer and stick your toes in a sandbox! Cheers… or as your bottle cap may read:  Okole maluna!
