This weekend I had a barley wine from Boulder Beer Company called Killer Penguin. It was a bit hoppier than I expected, at first taste, but by the time I swallowed this malty beer – I taste the smooth caramel finish.
Killer Penguin is totally worth picking up… just don’t expect it to taste like your everyday smooth barley wine. I imagine this would be an awesome beer to age, as it would mellow out that initial hop bite. So stock up – age… and share one with me in a year or so!
Cheers!!

It’s funny that you mention aging a barleywine. We had a mini aged beer tasting this past Saturday night. Three Fuller’s Vintage Ales (a 2009, 2010, and 2011), and three Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywines (a 2006, 2009, and 2012). Stay tuned for the results!

Oh my goodness – Bigfoot is delicious!! My husband has some back to 2001. We once compared a 2006 with a 2010… you can totally taste the difference in the aging. I bet it was a wonderful weekend! 😉

It was good fun! To be 100% honest, I preferred the fresh versions of those beers.
